we came to the breakfast table one morning
while you ruminated through the bread bag,
plastic wrinkling,
set the toast,
I watched
nothing came of it
as you sliced tomatoes
rhythmically
into the silence
our eyes didn’t catch
as you reached for a fork,
cracked me open,
then gently stirred the yolk.
